Forum Communications Co. newspapers score big in annual Minnesota Newspaper Association contest

FARGO, N.D. - Forum Communications Co. newspapers received more than 140 awards, ranging in categories from “Best Local Breaking News Story” to “Best Website” during the 2011-2012 Better Newspaper Contest sponsored by the Minnesota Newspaper Association. The awards were bestowed during the organization’s annual awards banquet held Jan. 24 in Bloomington, Minn.

The Better Newspaper Contest is held annually to recognize the state’s newspapers’ efforts to improve their print and digital products.

Forum Communications Co. received 145 of the more than 600 awards that were bestowed, and topped its accomplishments with the Detroit Lakes (Minn.) Tribune claiming The Mills Trophy, awarded yearly to the state’s best weekly newspaper. The  Tribune received a total of 20 awards, earning 86 points in the contest to take first place. Their winning entries included first place in the “General Excellence” category for weeklies 2,501-5,000; seven additional first place awards; two-second place awards; and 10 third place awards.

The Echo Press of Alexandria, Minn., another Forum Communications Co. newspaper, took second place with 23 awards, earning 82 points. Their winning entries included first place in the Herman Roe Editorial Writing Award competition by editor Al Edenloff, six additional first place awards, six second place awards and 10 third place awards.

Also, The Forum of Fargo-Moorhead finished second in the competition for The Vance Trophy, awarded to the state’s best daily newspaper each year. And The Duluth (Minn.) News Tribune, finished third. Both are Forum Communications newspapers.

In addition to numerous honors received by the newspapers, many Forum Communications employees were recognized for their own accomplishments. Reporters, photographers, editors, designers and sales representatives received some of the contest’s top awards.

The Forum lauded by newspaper design guru for extraordinary efforts to serve Bison fans in Texas

The 14-page special section on Bison football that The Forum had delivered to thousands of fans in Texas the night before the section inserted into the paper back in Fargo.

FARGO, N.D. – The Forum of Fargo-Moorhead was once again lauded on newspaper design guru Charles Apple’s blog “The Visual Side of Journalism” over the weekend.

In a long post made Sunday, Apple recounts the story of The Forum’s extraordinary efforts to serve readers a thousand miles away the night before a special sports section was to even insert into the paper. On Friday, The Forum printed a 14-page special section that not only inserted in the paper on Saturday, but was also printed in Texas and distributed at a pregame gathering at the stadium Friday night to thousands of North Dakota State University football fans. The Bison were in Frisco, Texas, to play in the NCAA Football Championship Series national title game for the second consecutive year.

Through the words of Forum Assistant Sports Editor Hayden Goethe and Forum Editor Matthew Von Pinnon, Apple recounts the story of the original idea being borne at The Forum’s morning news huddle last Friday, and then follows the story through the next hectic eight hours to make such an aggressive idea come true.

This is the fourth time in the past year that The Forum’s design efforts have received Apple’s attention on his blog. Apple also praised The Forum for having one of the best five front-page designs in the country on the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic; another time for The Forum’s unique Page 1 graphic treatment of a tile drainage package; and another time for a Titanic package that rolled out in advance of the anniversary.

Forum Communications Co. brings together entire sales force for continuing education

Forum Communications Co. sales representatives recently attended a daylong continuing education training course in Fargo. The goal was give each sales rep a competitive advantage in their market.

FARGO, N.D. – Forum Communications Co. brought together its entire sales force, including sales representatives from newspaper, broadcast and commercial printing properties, on three dates in early December for sales continuing education during the 2012 FCC Core Skills Workshop.

Dozens of Forum Communications sales reps participated in a full-day course that covered multiple aspects of sales training, with the goal being to give each sales representative a competitive advantage through knowledge of how FCC’s products and services are superior to others.

Lead Trainer Mary Altuvilla of People First Productivity Solutions, a Twin Cities consulting firm, led Forum Communications Co. sales representatives through the training.

The training was organized by Duluth News Tribune Ad Director Roz Randorf, and it was led by Mary Altuvilla, the lead trainer at People First Productivity Solutions, a Twin Cities consulting company.

“By enhancing the skills of the sales representatives,” Randorf said, “we will ultimately educate our customers about the advantages of selecting and using our products and provide them with a top-notch customer experience.”

Forum Communications Co. announces new sales leaders

FARGO, N.D. – Forum Communications Co. has appointed two new advertising sales leaders.

Amy Fredrickson has been named director of multimedia sales operations and Chris Dorsey has been named director of multimedia accounts and digital advertising.

These positions are designed to take advantage of Forum Communications Co.’s unique position in the marketplace by combining its multi-media products – including newspapers, digital, broadcast and printing – into a single buying experience for its customers.

Fredrickson has led the company’s combined JobsHQ sales force for the past two years, and has been with the company for 14 years. She is now directly supervising The Forum’s multi-media retail sales team, and leveraging new consolidated advertising programs from throughout Forum Communications’ three dozen media markets in the Midwest.

Dorsey has been with Forum Communications for 13 years, and has spent the last five years supervising the company’s digital advertising programs and sales. In addition to digital sales management; he will now work directly with a team of sales professionals who consolidate the advertising buying experience at the request of some customers.
He  is also supervising the creation of a media planning unit designed to strategically plan and place advertising throughout the company’s media  products.
